Water for Life Community Water Purifier

Water for Life's Community Safe Water Distribution System is designed to handle a wide variety of water situations, treating various water sources and conditions, and, because it is of modular configuration, can be expanded to serve 2000 people.

WFL Full Community System

UV treatment, killing the DNA of microorganisms, is the treatment of choice in the industry. In locations where electricity is not available, solar panels are utilized, with back-up battery power added to stabilize the UV. A pre-system arsenic/iron/manganese removal filter can also be engineered into a System.

The system is not intended for desalinization.

Optimal configuration depends upon site and water characteristics.

The Full System is specifically engineered to solve local water problems.  View a typical design for a remote village in Ghana, West Africa. Full System / PDF

The Basic System

Used with clear chemical and mineral free water taken from a borehole up to 150 feet deep, and serving 1000 people with 500-1500 gallons per day. The Basic System is capable of operation sunup to sundown on sunny days and reduced operation on rainy/cloudy days.

Capabilities
Solar panel, (8) 60 watt - Capable of running up to 12 hours/day on solar energy Submersible pump, 2.5-3.5 GPM. The pump is capable of pumping 150 feet vertical lift

The Basic System includes 100' water hose and electric cable to pump, 25' electric cable to solar panels, all fittings and faucets, including brackets for mounting solar panel to a storage tank. A tank of 600-1000 gallon capacity is recommended.

Full System

Used with cloudy or contaminated water. The Full System includes the Basic System plus filtration, needed if the water is cloudy, has harmful chemicals or minerals, or is bad tasting. Filtration is capable of removing at least 99% sand and rust from water. Carbon filters are capable of removing at least 99% DDT, lead, or heavy metals from water.

A Full System offers five stages of protection:

Pre-filtration (to clarify water)

Purification (UV radiation to kill microorganisms - bacteria, cysts, amoeba, coliform, Typhus, Schistosomiasis, Cholera and many others)

Storage

Final stage of purification (unique final dose of UV radiation to prevent re-contamination of the tank water/carbon filters).

(A sixth stage if needed - a pre-system treatment can be added for removal of iron/manganese/arsenic, in which case a second pump is required.)

The system includes: 8 solar panels, submersible standard/deep well pump, submersible diaphragm pump, pre-filter, deep cycle batteries (2), ultraviolet sterilizers (2), and interconnects.

Capabilities

Solar panel, (8) 70 watt - Capable of running up to 12 hours/day on solar energy

Battery back-up power - (2) sealed, 100AH 12 volt batteries. Capable of providing 12-24 hours of pumping/sterilizing during cloudy periods

Submersible standard/deep well pump, 2.5-3.5 GPM. The pump is capable of pumping 150 feet vertical lift

Pre-system, laterite/carbon filter in concrete tank - to remove iron/arsenic

Submersible diaphragm pump. This DC pump is capable of pumping 12 liters/minute at 30 meters total dynamic lift

Purification system - (2) WFL 2 GPM sterilizers. The sterilizers are capable of removing at least 99.9% bacteria, cyst, amoebae from water

Pre-filter cartridge filter. Durable housing with standard cartridges Cartridges are capable of being cleaned a minimum of 100 times before replacing, unless water is extremely contaminated or turbid. With a laterite/carbon pre-system filter, more frequent cleaning may be necessary. The pre-filter contains 21 standard cartridges.

Spare UV lamps and filters to provide 3 years of operation before replacement is needed

Applies to Both Systems

Capable of being installed by technical personnel in country

Capable of being used on a well in conjunction with a hand pump

Capable of being maintained by a trained person having a secondary school degree and mechanical aptitude

Capable, if parts are reordered and on hand, of maintenance with less than 1 day down time

Replacement interval of UV lamps is 1 year minimum

Typical replacement interval for pre-filter cartridges is 1 year

Design lifetime of non-consumables is 15 years
